"Why did you choose ophthalmology?" and “Why do you choose to give?” Those were the questions posed on the ASCRS Foundation’s Give Sight Graffiti Wall sponsored by Aerie Pharmaceuticals at this year’s ASCRS ASOA Annual Meeting in San Diego. The answers served as the inspiration for artist Scott Biersack’s impressive word mural.
The ASCRS Foundation challenged meeting attendees to help unlock this year’s generous $30,000 match offered by Aerie Pharmaceuticals. Attendees answered the call, and together contributed $34,080! The $64,080 will enable the expansion of the Foundation’s ongoing Operation Sight program here in the United States, and the growing multi-partner physician training and facility improvement initiative the foundation leads in Ethiopia.
Outside the San Diego Convention Center, over 400 runners took the streets alongside the harbor for the annual 5K Run for Sight and 1K Walk. Generously supported by Johnson & Johnson Vision, the run provided a fun opportunity for some early morning exercise while simultaneously raising awareness of the foundation’s humanitarian eye care programs. Runners and walkers enjoyed sunny San Diego Bay views while raising $13,923!
The top 2019 finishers were:
• 5k Run: Austin Fox, MD, in 17:46.34 (Male) and Kathryn Hatch in 21:20.11 (Female)
• 1K Walk: Todd Wahlberg in 12:27.51 (Male) and Isabel McLean, MD in 15:08.88 (Female)
The Foundation Board and staff would like to thank those meeting attendees and industry partners who helped raise more than $78,000 to benefit the Foundation’s programs.
