Over the last six days, our network of amazing volunteer surgeons and ophthalmic staff members have provided hundreds of sight-restoring surgeries to needy Operation Sight patients. Among those was the program’s milestone 4,000th free surgery! How fitting that it came during National Sight Week’s celebration of volunteerism! Volunteer surgeon John Bell, MD, from The Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City made the surgery possible, and shared a few words in this video.
This important milestone is the direct result of the generous donors, volunteer surgeons, and many staff members who’ve contributed their time and talent to the foundation’s Operation Sight program since its founding in 2014.
While we are excited by the program’s growth, we look forward to a continued expansion of our volunteer network and donor base in hopes of treating the significant number of eligible patient applicants now on the Operation Sight waitlist. We need your support to help deliver the same life-changing opportunities to those who turn to Operation Sight as their last hope. You can give sight tomorrow by making your gift today at ascrsfoundation.org/donation.
Here what just a few of our waitlisted patients had to say when asked what a charitable cataract surgery through Operation Sight would mean to them.
“People like me who don’t have insurance are waiting with hope. Your program gives me hope that I’ll be able to have the surgery I need.” – Birmingham, AL
“Losing your sight is terrifying and takes away your freedom. This is the only hope I have.” – Plano, TX
“I will be able to drive to work and get their safely. Loosing your eyesight means you lose the ability to take care of yourself and must rely on others.” – Shelby, NC
With the help of donors and volunteers like you, these patients can have the cataract surgery they need through Operation Sight.
